Asher Roth - Asleep in the Bread Aisle [review]

Buy or Borrow: Borrow

It looks like Asher Roth will be the next  product of a good marketing plan because the commercials and blog advertisements spoke louder than the actual music.

Asleep in the Break Aisle started off just how everyone expected. Being released on 420, the first three songs were burnout and party hardy type songs. But before you start to think that’s all he has in his arsenal “La Di Da” comes through the speakers, letting you know… he’s frustrated?

In this tried in true, “they are trying to keep me down” song the Universal rapper says, “I’m that different, just ask Jigga” which is an appropriate thing to request, since this song, much like the whole album, sounds as lazy as Jay-Z’s verse on Raphael Sadeeq’s “Oh Girl.”

Before the listener actually takes part in the action the album title suggests, Cee-Lo comes to the rescue, helping Roth explain to the ladies why he doesn’t want a girlfriend on the song entitled, “Be By Myself.” This is the highlight of the whole album, and the Pennsylvania native must have known that because the very next track is the same song in a different form.

She Don’t Wanna Man” is a song about a girl not wanting anything serious from a guy. This sounds utterly familiar… OH! Because you just made a song about that.

Nothing else noteworthy happens until, “As I Em” when another guest appearance livens up the party. Chester French helps the white rapper try to separate himself from Eminem. Didn’t see THAT one coming…

Now that the album is 3/4 over, Roth decides to show he can switch up the flow. Unfortunately, he decided it would be a good idea to try to flow quickly on the same track with Busta Rhymes. Good try sport.

All-in-all, there isn’t anything special about this album. His mixtapes packed more excitement than Asleep in the Bread Aisle. When the last song goes off and you think back to what you just heard, it feels like you’ve had a marijuana-induced memory lapse. Then again, that might be what he was going for.

Have Fun.

you are right that his mixtape is waaaay better than the album. and the line about a “marijuana induced memory lapse” is on point. i didnt even realize that the 2 songs, “be by myself” & “she don’t wanna man” are about the same thing. i couldnt really get into them nor tell what they were about.

i think the best songs on the album though (ones you didnt even mention) are “sour patch kids” and “His Dream”. those songs are nice. 6 of the songs are enjoyable, the other 6 are forgettble.
i was actually expecting alot more after hearing the Greenhouse Effect Mixtape.

Oh well…back to listening to Joe Budden & Cunninlynguists
